Two points were hanging in the air over Mosaic Stadium.
The Edmonton Elks had scored a touchdown against the Saskatchewan Roughriders and lined up for the conversion. In Canadian football, the offense may attempt a two-point play by running or passing the ball into the end zone. Edmonton needed the points. Its quarterback took the snap, looked toward the middle and threw.
The pass never reached its destination.
It hit the goalpost.
This is one of the peculiarities of Canadian football. The uprights do not stand behind the end zone, safely removed from the traffic of the game. They rise directly from the goal line, in the very place where receivers run routes, defenders turn their heads and quarterbacks try to fit passes through narrow openings.
Under the current rules, the result was immediate. A forward pass that strikes the goalpost assembly is incomplete. The ball is dead. The play is over.[3]
There was no penalty against Edmonton.
There was no replay of the conversion.
There was only the strange finality of a football hitting a steel structure and falling harmlessly to the turf.
The announcers remarked that this would not be a problem much longer.
Beginning with the 2027 season, the Canadian Football League will move the goalposts from the goal line to the rear of the end zone. The playing field will be shortened from 110 yards to 100, and the end zones will be reduced from 20 yards deep to 15. The league says moving the uprights should clear the middle of the scoring area and produce more completed passes and touchdowns.[1][2]
At first, the failed conversion appeared to be one of those small episodes that disappear into a much larger game.
Then the game became a two-point game.
Edmonton eventually won 36–34 on a 56-yard field goal.
The goalpost had not cost the Elks the game. They had overcome it.
But imagine removing that collision from the sequence. Suppose the pass reaches its receiver and Edmonton scores the two points. Every decision that follows takes place under different circumstances. The score changes. The clock acquires a different meaning. A team that needs a touchdown may suddenly need only a field goal. A fourth-down gamble may become a punt. A conservative play call may become an aggressive one.
The ending might still have been dramatic.
But it would not have been the same ending.
That is the interesting thing about an obstruction. It does not need to determine the final result to change the path leading to it.
Search marketing is now confronting an obstruction of its own.
For more than two decades, businesses learned how to play one particular version of the discovery game. A customer entered a phrase into Google. Google returned a page of links. Businesses competed to appear as close to the top of that page as possible.
That game has not disappeared.
But the field on which it is played is being rearranged.
The Goal Used to Be Obvious
The traditional objective of search engine optimization could be explained in two words:
Rank first.
A business identified the words prospective customers used. It created pages around those subjects. It improved its website, earned links, and attempted to persuade Google that its page deserved a higher position than the pages around it.
The process was complicated.
The objective was not.
Google’s results page functioned like a row of starting gates. The first result received the best position. The second result received the next-best position. Even the sixth or seventh result remained present on the screen, waiting for someone to choose it.
The user performed the comparison.
The search engine provided the options.
Now consider a different kind of search.

Something isn’t adding up. Our rankings are about where they’ve always been, yet organic traffic is down. Is this just the effect of AI search answering more questions before people ever click a website, or is there something we should be fixing ourselves?
This is not simply a longer keyword.
It is a request for analysis.
The user is asking the machine to identify possible causes, compare them, explain the differences, and recommend what should happen next.
A conventional search engine answers by pointing toward documents.
An AI system attempts to answer by reading documents and returning with a conclusion.
That distinction changes the competition.
The business is no longer trying only to become one of the links presented to the customer.
It is trying to become one of the sources used to construct the customer’s understanding.
AI is not killing SEO. It is changing the dimensions of the field, moving the goalposts and rewriting how brands qualify for visibility.
The Difference Between Ranking and Selection
Suppose a business ranks sixth for an important search.
Sixth is not first. But sixth is still visible.
The company’s name may appear on the page. Its headline may attract attention. A user may recognize the brand or decide that the first five results do not answer the question.
Traditional search distributes visibility unevenly, but it distributes visibility across a relatively long list.
AI-generated answers are more selective.
An AI system may retrieve ten pages, compare five businesses, and mention only two of them. The remaining sources are not shown beneath the winners in descending order.
They disappear from the answer.
This creates a fundamental difference between ranking and selection.
Ranking asks:

Selection asks:
Do we appear at all?
Generative Engine Optimization, usually shortened to GEO, emerged as a way of describing this new competition. The objective expands beyond occupying traditional search-result real estate. It includes becoming a source that an AI system trusts enough to cite, summarize, or use when generating a recommendation.
Research into GEO has found that changes such as adding relevant statistics, quotations and authoritative citations can improve a source’s visibility in generated answers. In the researchers’ experiments, some methods produced gains approaching 40 percent, although the effects differed substantially by topic and query.[5]
That does not mean every page should be stuffed with quotations and numbers.
It means evidence matters.
A page that merely repeats the common explanation has little reason to be selected over all the other pages repeating it.
A page containing original data, a documented method, an expert interview, or a specific case has something an answer engine can use.
The old contest rewarded relevance.
The new contest increasingly rewards contribution.
The Field Is Getting Shorter
In 2027, ten yards will disappear from the CFL field.
The distance from one goal line to the other will fall from 110 yards to 100. The field will still be wider than its American counterpart. The league will still use twelve players, three downs, and unlimited motion. But the journey from one end to the other will be shorter.
AI search is shortening the distance between finding information and making a decision.
A few years ago, someone might search for a service, click through several websites, read different explanations, go back to Google, adjust the search, and then compare a few companies before choosing one.
That process could take several searches and several tabs.
Now, much of that work can happen inside a single conversation.
An AI-assisted journey may look like this:
- Ask a detailed question.
- Receive a synthesized explanation.
- Ask for a comparison.
- Request a recommendation.
- Make a decision.
Traditional search is like a library catalog. It tells you where to look.
AI search is like a research assistant. It walks into the library, reads parts of several books, and returns with a summary.
That is more convenient for the customer.
It is not necessarily more convenient for the business.
For years, companies designed websites around the assumption that visitors would encounter the page before forming an opinion of the company.
The photos helped set the mood, while the layout showed people where to look first. The headline introduced the idea, the copy filled in the details, and the call to action made the next step clear.
But an AI-generated answer can introduce a business without reproducing any of that.
A lot of people may hear about your company before they ever visit your website. Your name might show up in a comparison, in a short answer, or in a recommendation influenced by reviews and other sites. Sometimes the only thing they see is one sentence from your page or a small citation under an AI response.
The website remains important.
But the content must now survive without the website around it.
The Page Must Work After It Has Been Taken Apart
This may be the most consequential change in AI search.
Businesses have traditionally treated content as part of a designed composition. The headline, paragraph, image, and button work together.
AI systems routinely separate them.
They may retrieve one section of a page without the introduction.
They may quote a paragraph without showing the photograph beside it.
They may combine a company’s explanation with information from a newspaper article, a public review, a professional directory and a competitor’s website.
The content must therefore remain useful when removed from its original setting.
A service description should explain the service without depending on a clever headline.
A statistic should identify what was measured and where the number came from.
A case study should specify the action, the result and the period over which the result occurred.
A local landing page should contain actual local information rather than generic copy with a city name inserted into it.
A paragraph should answer a recognizable question rather than merely connecting one section of promotional prose to another.
The page no longer functions only as a page.
It also functions as a collection of possible answers.
This is why clear headings, concise definitions, tables, lists and direct explanations have become useful. They are not substitutes for good writing. They are structures that allow both people and machines to identify what a passage means.
Marketers now have to think about more than whether an article works as a complete piece. They also have to ask whether each section still makes sense when it is pulled out and shown on its own.
The End Zone Is Cleaner and More Exclusive
The CFL wants to move the uprights because the goalpost occupies valuable space.
It stands in the middle of the scoring area. Receivers must account for it. Defenders can use it as an accidental obstacle. Passes can hit it and die.
Moving it backward creates a cleaner end zone.
AI search creates a cleaner interface in much the same way.
Instead of presenting a long page filled with links, advertisements, maps, videos, and related questions, an answer engine can consolidate the material into several paragraphs.
To the user, the result feels simpler.
To the businesses competing for attention, it is often more restrictive.
A conventional results page can show ten organic listings along with local results, advertisements, and additional search features.
An AI-generated response may name only a few sources.
The cleaner the answer becomes, the fewer visible positions may remain.
This produces a winner-heavy environment.
The sixth-ranked website on a search page still has a sixth position.
The sixth source considered by an AI model may have no position at all.
It may have influenced the answer without receiving a citation.
It may have been evaluated and rejected.
It may never have been retrieved.
This is why content must become more than relevant.
It must become selection-worthy.
What Makes Information Selection-Worthy?
Consider two statements.
The first:
Businesses should improve their websites to increase conversions.
The second:
After reducing its mobile checkout from five screens to three, the retailer recorded a 14 percent increase in completed purchases over the following 60 days.
The first statement is true in the broadest possible sense.
It is also replaceable.
Thousands of pages can say the same thing.
The second statement contains an action, a measurement, a result, and a period of time. It provides evidence. A writer or an AI system has a reason to reference that particular source.
Selection-worthy content contributes something the final answer would be weaker without.
That contribution may be:
- Proprietary research
- First-party performance data
- A documented case study
- An interview with a named specialist
- A useful original framework
- Local knowledge unavailable from a national publication
- A careful comparison based on clearly stated criteria
- A direct explanation drawn from real experience
The defining quality is not length.
It is necessity.
Would the larger conversation lose something if this source did not exist?
If the answer is no, the content is vulnerable to being ignored.
When Almost Everyone Makes the Playoffs
The CFL is also changing its postseason.
Starting in 2027, eight of the CFL’s nine teams will make the playoffs. The season will also begin earlier, over Victoria Day weekend, and wrap up around Thanksgiving.[4]
This creates an interesting analogy.
When eight of nine teams qualify, simply making the playoffs becomes less meaningful.
Qualification is not the same as distinction.
Generative AI has done something similar to content production.
It has become remarkably easy to produce acceptable writing.
A business can generate an article in seconds. It will probably contain a title, an introduction, several subheadings, and a conclusion. It may be grammatically sound. It may explain the general subject reasonably well.
A few years ago, that might have separated the company from competitors that published almost nothing.
Today it merely qualifies.
The web is filling with material that is competent, comprehensive and forgettable.
The articles use similar structures.
They make similar points.
They repeat similar statistics.
They arrive at similar conclusions.
They are not necessarily wrong.
They are simply unnecessary.
This is the danger of average AI-generated content. It clears the minimum standard while providing no particular reason to be remembered, cited, or selected.
The future advantage belongs to businesses that possess information a general-purpose model cannot independently create.
A restaurant can document its chef’s process, ingredient sourcing and seasonal decisions.
A law firm can explain patterns it has observed across years of handling a certain type of dispute.
A home-care provider can publish detailed information about the logistical problems local families actually face.
A retailer can analyze its own customer behavior, sizing patterns and seasonal demand.
A marketing agency can document what happened before and after a technical repair, campaign change or website redesign.
AI can help organize that knowledge.
It cannot manufacture the underlying experience honestly.
The Fundamentals Still Matter
New technology tends to produce exaggerated declarations.
One group insists nothing has changed.
Another insists everything that came before is dead.
Neither explanation is useful.
The CFL is moving its goalposts and shortening its field. It is not abandoning Canadian football.
There will still be three downs.
There will still be twelve players.
The field will remain 65 yards wide.
Receivers will still be allowed extensive pre-snap motion.
The league has repeatedly emphasized that these defining Canadian features will remain, even amid substantial controversy over the changes.[1][2][6]
AI search has the same relationship with traditional SEO.
The new system is built on top of much of the old one.
A page still needs to be found before it can be retrieved.
Search crawlers still need access.
The subject and structure still need to be understandable.
The website still needs to demonstrate who the business is, what it does, and why its information should be trusted.
The basics still matter. Your website needs to be easy for search engines to crawl and index, load quickly, and be simple to navigate. It should use clean HTML, have a logical internal linking structure, and include structured data where it makes sense. Just as importantly, your content should clearly show who wrote it, where the information comes from, and why people should trust it. Strong backlinks, consistent business information across the web, and real-world experience are still some of the strongest signals you can provide.
There is no secret schema property that forces ChatGPT to recommend a company.
There is no standalone text file that allows a weak website to bypass search infrastructure.
No paragraph guarantees an AI citation.
The traditional rules determine whether the business can enter the field.
The emerging rules influence whether the ball comes its way.
The Customer Journey Begins Before the Provider Search
The CFL’s earlier season is an attempt to enter the summer sooner.
Instead of waiting until June, the league intends to begin on Victoria Day weekend in May. It wants to establish the habit of CFL football earlier in the audience’s calendar.
Businesses must make a similar adjustment to the buyer journey.

By then, much of the decision has already been shaped.
The customer has developed a vocabulary.
The customer has decided which problems matter.
The customer has formed an opinion about which solutions sound credible.
A company appearing only for the final provider search enters the conversation late.
A company that answered the earlier questions may have helped define the conversation itself.
This is the new question-cascade strategy.
Content should address the full sequence through which someone recognizes a problem, investigates it, evaluates possible solutions, and finally chooses a provider.
The objective is not to place a sales pitch at every stage.
It is to become useful before the sale is obvious.
Discovery No Longer Belongs to One Platform
Professional sports leagues once thought about distribution primarily in terms of television.
Today the game may reach fans through traditional broadcasts, streaming services, highlight packages, social clips, news coverage, podcasts, and international media agreements.
Search visibility has fragmented in the same way.
A prospective customer may discover a business through:
- Google Search
- Google AI Overviews or AI Mode
- ChatGPT
- Microsoft Copilot
- Perplexity
- Claude
- Gemini
- YouTube
- TikTok
- News coverage
- Industry directories
- Reviews and community discussions
These platforms overlap more than most people realize. A public social post can show up in search. An AI tool may pull information from pages already available on the web. A reporter might find an expert through LinkedIn, and a useful Reddit thread or customer discussion can later become part of what people see in search results.
A business’s visibility now comes from more than its own website. The site explains who the company is and what it does, but other sources help fill in the picture. News coverage adds an outside perspective. Reviews show what customers actually experienced. Professional profiles identify the people behind the business, while directories confirm basic details such as location and services.
Social posts also matter because they show what the company talks about over time.
None of these replaces the website. Together, though, they give search engines and AI tools a fuller sense of the business. That is why AI visibility is not only about publishing better content. It is also about building a stronger reputation across the web.
The Scoreboard Has to Change
SEO reports have relied on the same core numbers for years: rankings, organic traffic, click-through rates, backlinks, and conversions.
Those numbers still matter, but they no longer capture the entire discovery process.
Imagine that a prospective customer asks an AI assistant for help, encounters a business in the answer, and then searches the company’s name on Google.
Analytics may record that visit as branded organic search.
The AI conversation that created the interest may be invisible.
Or the customer may type the address directly and appear as direct traffic.
Once again, the path has changed even though the outcome looks familiar.
Businesses should still track rankings, organic traffic, and conversions. But that is no longer enough on its own.
It is also worth paying attention to whether your brand appears in AI-generated answers, how often competitors are mentioned instead, whether those answers describe your business accurately, and whether traffic is coming from tools such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. Branded searches, direct visits, and leads that begin with AI-assisted research can also reveal changes that traditional SEO reports may miss.
None of this is perfectly precise. AI answers can change depending on the platform, the wording of the question, the user, and even the day the search is made. One test does not prove that a brand is visible or invisible. The better approach is to test the same important questions over time and look for patterns.
The useful approach is repeated observation.
Ask representative questions.
Record the sources and brands that appear.
Look for patterns.
Connect those patterns to actual business outcomes.
The modern scorecard should not replace rankings.
It should explain what rankings alone can no longer show.
The Route to Victory Changed
The Elks won 36–34.
The final margin was two points. That was the same number Edmonton had been attempting to score when the pass struck the upright.
It would be tempting to say the goalpost nearly cost them the game.
But that is not quite right.
Football does not allow us to remove one play while leaving every later play untouched. Change the conversion, and you change the score. Change the score, and you change the decisions. Change the decisions and the ending unfolds differently.
The upright did not simply erase two points from a final total.
It created a different game.
Edmonton adapted to that game. It stayed close enough to attempt a 56-yard field goal. The kick went through, and the Elks won.
That is a more useful lesson for businesses than the familiar warning that the rules are changing.
AI search does not necessarily prevent a company from being discovered.
It changes the route discovery takes.
A business may still win the customer.
But it may need to do so after the customer has already received an AI-generated summary.
It may need to earn recognition without receiving the first click.
It may need to become one of three cited sources instead of one of ten visible links.
It may need to establish authority through original information rather than another broadly optimized article.
It may need to appear earlier in the customer’s investigation and across more than one platform.
The fundamentals still matter.
The game is still the game.
But the decisions that lead to victory are changing because the field around them has changed.
The Modern AI SEO Playbook
Businesses preparing for that field should concentrate on five things.
Get the website itself right
Before you think too much about AI search, take a hard look at the website itself. Are the pages loading the way they should? Can people find what they need without getting lost? Can search engines move through the site and understand how everything connects? If the answer is no, the rest of the strategy is working uphill.
Make each section useful on its own
Clear headings, short explanations, tables, and direct answers make it easier for search engines and AI tools to understand your content. But the writing still needs a point of view. Good structure helps the information get found; original thinking is what makes it worth using.
Publish evidence that belongs to the business
Create first-party research, documented case studies, local data, expert interviews and clear methodologies. Do not merely summarize the conversation. Contribute to it.
Build authority beyond the owned domain
Pursue legitimate media coverage, complete professional profiles, accurate directories, strong reviews and meaningful participation in relevant communities. Give the wider web consistent evidence of who the business is.
Map the entire question cascade
Identify what customers ask before they search for a provider. Answer the questions that help them recognize the problem, understand the options, compare approaches, and make a decision.
The Goalposts Are Moving
In 2027, a quarterback will be able to throw through the middle of a CFL end zone without worrying that the football might strike an upright planted on the goal line.
The game will look slightly different.
The dimensions will be different.
Some strategies will become more valuable, and others less so.
But the objective will remain the same.
Move the ball.
Score points.
Win.
The same is true of search.
Businesses still need to be found.
They still need to establish trust.
They still need to persuade customers that they are the right choice.
But the path between the customer’s question and the company’s answer is getting shorter, more selective and more heavily mediated by machines.
Edmonton did not win by arguing that the goalpost should not have been there.
It won by playing the game that remained after the ball struck it.
That is the task now facing every business that depends on search visibility.
You do not win by standing where the goalposts used to be.
You win by understanding where the field is going.
